Ammonia Poisoning
What
is Ammonia poisoning?
Ammonia
poisoning, although not a disease is a common problem in fish tanks (especially
new). It causes a great deal of stress to your fish, aggravating other
disorders and leading to a higher risk of contracting a bacterial disease.
What
causes Ammonia poisoning?
It can be caused
by having poor water conditions. Poor water conditions can be from not changing
your water often enough, having dead fish in the tank, lots of uneaten food,
overstocking and also when the tank is still establishing itself.
How
to treat Ammonia poisoning:
- Check your water conditions often to prevent future poisoning
and to understand the level of poisoning.
- Complete a 30% to 50% water change, Repeat this within 24 hours
as necessary. Check with an Ammonia test kit to ensure the levels are reducing.
- Treat with Ammo lock or AmGuard to treat the ammonia if water
changes are not reducing the levels. (Make sure the filter carbon is removed
during treatment).
- Ensure that your aquarium food is of a high quality and has not
past it’s expiry date and that you are not overfeeding.
- Ensure that your biological
filter is working well and is clean.
